Dr. Nehal Patel comes from a long line of physicians. His grandfather was a cardiologist and his father is an ophthalmologist. Growing up in Western India, Dr. Patel recalls joining his dad for what he called “eye camps”. They would travel to the small village where they were from once a year to provide much-needed care to individuals who had no access to healthcare, let alone eye care.
“He would do 200-300 cataract surgeries in a weekend,” said Dr. Patel. “I would see people go from being completely blind, with mature cataracts, to having their vision completely restored. The joy and gratitude they expressed was very moving. This obviously influenced me in choosing this field.”
Today, Dr. Patel’s focus is in retina, glaucoma and refractive surgery at Gulf Coast Eye Institute. He is well loved by his patients for his warmth and compassion in addition to his experience and skill. “I enjoy ophthalmology because I am a physician as well as a surgeon and I am able to use all the latest technology and lasers. It’s a wonderful field to be in.”
Dr. Patel completed his early training in India before moving to the states and taking on an intensive glaucoma fellowship, internship in general surgery, an ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center before joining the Gulf Coast Eye Institute team in 2007.
